Grandma, who lives in a rugged coastal town, invites her eight grandchildren, three boys and five girls, for a visit. The oldest is Levi (13), and the youngest is Esme (5).

After her adult children leave the scene, Grandma becomes very excited, for she has a special surprise for the grandkids—an oddly shaped ramshackle tree house perched high in an ancient oak tree. Levi climbs the wooden ladder first, but is denied entrance by a locked peacock blue door.

Up the ladder last comes Grandma with a tiny blue key with a pearl-encrusted, heart shaped head that will open the door. But before she turns the doorknob she warns the children, “Use only this door for coming and going.”

Once the peacock door to the tree house opens, the children begin to understand their grandmother’s warning. Around the interior of the tree house are eight more doors, each of a different hue.

Addison and Claire, both 11, decide to peek out the copper door when no one else is around. What they find is a huge mirror connected to a slide that takes them to a far-away land.

When the other children return and notice Addison and Claire missing, Levi, Eleanor (12) and Esme exit the bronze door to begin the search. When they disappear, Brody (10), Tilly (10), and Ivan (9) begin their search for their lost cousins through the green door, for the bronze and copper doors are mysteriously locked shut.

Thus begins Wanda Kay Knight’s middle grade fantasy/adventure, The Peacock Door. Each set of children has their respective adventures in a land not too dissimilar to L. Frank Baum’s classic Oz series.

Addison and Claire meet an eccentric, self-centered woman who brings them to a home decorated with mirrors and clocks. Once inside, the girls can’t find the exit to leave. Levi, Eleanor, and Esme encounter a very weird dilapidated cabin inhabited by two extremely strange people; and a giant-sized boy traps Tilly, Brody, and Ivan in a cage.

All eight kids realize they are lost and learn that the only way home is to follow a cobblestone path in search of the Oracle who will send them back to their tree house, pronto, if only they can find him.
Along the way the eight cousins learn a few life lessons regarding greed, beauty, and selflessness. The target group for The Peacock Door is the middle grade audience, but Knight’s descriptive style, fascinating plot, and clever dialogue will keep a reader of any age enthralled.

I love reading middle grade novels because they make the world so much simpler. Same thing with this novel. This tale of eight cousins is so sweet and amazingly well done. The character development was very well done and you could tell that each character had their own voice. The plot and pacing were very well done as well and the story kept my interest throughout the whole book. The writing was also very well done and very age approrpriate for middle graders.

The only issue I could find with the book is that so many characters could overwhelm some readers. While the book is really well written and it's easy to tell when each character speaks or does something, it might still be slightly overwhelming for some readers to remember all of these seperate characters.

Verdict Phenominal book and one that I'll keep for my kids. Definitely recommend if you have a young child who loves fantasy reads.
I heard about this book from a friend of mine, so I bought it on to try. I read it in a couple of hours, but that's because it was really good! The story is really cute, for all ages (I'm going to give it to my kids to read next), but doesn't seem too young for adults. It seemed to drag on a little at the end, but it wasn't enough to make me put it down!
I gave it to my granddaughter. She just started reading it and loves it so far
Ms Wanda Kay Knight took me on a fun filled adventure! I'm nearly 50 years old and loved every moment of this great read...it was hard to put down. I could relate to each cousin. I said to myself several times, 'I would have done that'. I could relate to the grandmother as well. Even though I'm not a grandmother, I am a mom of teenagers, I was reminded to relax and realize kids will be kids and that they will learn from their decisions. Just go with their adventure. If you haven't read The Peacock Door, you should. Its a great adventure no matter how old you are.
This was my first middle-grade fantasy book to read, but it blew me away. Wanda Kay Knight provided her readers with breathtaking, sensory-rich images that brought every page to life. The characters were realistic and extremely likable. The plot twisted and turned in fun and unexpected ways. The way Knight told this story, weaving back and forth through different perspectives, was mesmerizing. The best word to describe the story of “The Peacock Door” is “magical”. I fell back to childhood as I rooted for these eight children to find their way back to their grandmother’s tree house, all while learning important lessons about life, as well as about themselves. I was absolutely enchanted by the mystical world Wanda Kay Knight crafted. I can’t wait to read more of her work, in the future. I highly recommend that you all get your hands on a copy of “The Peacock Door”.
